I Think My Car Needs a New Power Steering Pump

JA Motors would be happy to inspect and test your power steering pump to see if it needs to be replaced. If you drive a high-mileage automobile that is equipped with hydraulic power steering, the chances of the pump going bad are increased. Generally, the pump will last about 100,000 miles before it needs to be replaced. Here are signs that you have a bad steering pump.

Strange Steering Noises

The pump is not going to carry large signs and shout at the top of its lungs when it protests, but it will make groaning or moaning noises every time you turn the steering wheel. You will notice that it protests louder the tighter you turn the wheel. This is an indication that the steering pump is reaching the end of its life and you need a new one installed in the power steering system.

Stiff Steering Wheel

As with all of the pumps in your automobile, the steering pump is responsible for pushing a fluid through the power steering system. In this case, the fluid is hydraulic power steering fluid. Without this fluid, your steering wheel will stiffen and become hard to turn. If you are having difficulties turning the steering wheel, it’s probable that the pump is unable to circulate the steering fluid.

Unresponsive Steering

It’s important to have the steering pump inspected right away if you notice either of the things discussed above. The reason why is that your vehicle’s steering can become unresponsive if the steering pump dies. In other words, you will be stranded in a vehicle that you cannot control because it is not responding when you turn the steering wheel.

Leaking Red Fluid

Another sign that the pump is too old is leaking red fluid on the garage floor. This is an indication that the pump is releasing the steering fluid out of the steering system. You can easily check the fluid level to see if it is low. There is a reservoir in your engine that is clearly marked power steering fluid. Make sure to check the fluid only when the engine is cold.

Silvery-Red Fluid

Finally, if, when you check the fluid, there are silver flakes in it, you definitely need a new steering pump. The silver flakes are the metal from the pump that is disintegrating.
