Leaking Vacuum Hoses Can Wreak Havoc on Your Engine’s Performance

JA Motors is the best auto shop in Peachtree City, and we can replace any vacuum hoses that are leaking in your car, truck, or utility vehicle’s engine. You would be surprised how much a leaking vacuum hose can cause problems in the engine. We are going to list the signs of a leaking vacuum hose below so you know what to look for in your automobile. Bring your vehicle to our shop at the first indication of trouble.

Poor Engine Performance

The engine produces vacuum pressure in the combustion chamber. This pressure is routed throughout the engine in vacuum hoses so it can be used as a power source. If a vacuum hose starts to leak, the vacuum pressure fills the engine with air. Consequently, this air interferes with the production of combustion. As such, your engine will perform poorly.

High or Erratic RPMs

With each release of vacuum pressure, the engine’s RPMs spike. If the vacuum leak is a steady one, the tachometer needle will register continual high RPMs. If the vacuum pressure escapes from the hose in spurts, the tachometer needle will move up and down with each blast of air.

Reduced Fuel Economy

Unfortunately, these engine performance problems will cause the engine to burn more fuel. As such, you will notice that you do not get as many miles that you normally get with a full tank of gas. This poor gas mileage will continue until the vacuum hose that is leaking is replaced.

Component Malfunction

As we mentioned above, the vacuum pressure is used as a power source. One component that uses this pressure is a power source is the power steering pump. If the hose to the pump is leaking, you may start to have problems with your vehicle’s power steering.

Hissing or Suction Noises

If you believe that you have a leaking vacuum hose in the engine, listen carefully while the engine is running. A vacuum leak makes noises. Depending on the size of the leak, the noise that you will hear will either be hissing or suctioning. The latter sounds like a household vacuum accessory hose.

Check Engine Warning

Finally, in light of the problems discussed above, your engine control unit will likely receive some error codes from system sensors. As such, it will turn on the check engine light until you have the vacuum leak repaired.

We can do that here at JA Motors in Peachtree City, GA, so bring us up today to set up a service appointment.
